Using Powerful Children's Literature to Promote Social Justice, Equity, and Diversity
Limited Capacity full
Adding this to your schedule will put you on the waitlist.

Many children's authors write powerful stories that are tough topics in the classroom. Critical literacy in the classroom asks readers to imagine standing in the shoes of others - to understand experience and texts from our own perspectives and the viewpoints of others. By using children's literature teachers can enrich learning discussions and build understanding of social justice, diversity, and equity. In this session I will share some high-quality literature that allows for opportunities to think critically about textual representations of the world: poverty, racism, bullying, identity, and language. Ideas will be shared on how to "unpack" challenging or sensitive stories in the classroom for students to make powerful connections.
