Children's and young adult books that portray characters that are differently abled are important tools for helping all readers learn about, understand, and relate to people with different abilities. Today, authors strive to instill in young readers a positive, accepting impression of characters that have differing abilities. A selection of Canadian picture books and YA books will be shared that depicts characters who are differently abled in a positive and respectful way. I will share current books that are fantastic classroom read-alouds that show powerful character development, and books to share with inclusive students and their families.
