Number sense can be thought of as flexible thinking about numbers. This flexible and fluent thinking allows students to develop deeper understandings of many math concepts. Students need to regularly interact with numbers and to have an opportunity to play with them. Regular number sense routines and activities in kindergarten to grade 2 allow time for students to become more involved in expanding their own conceptual knowledge and to incorporate new ideas into their thinking.
